Layers, more than you think you need

A base layer, a mid layer, and a proper waterproof, even in July. Coastal courses in Cornwall and Devon can shift ten degrees and gain a stiff wind between the first tee and the turn.

Waterproof gloves, not just a waterproof jacket

Most groups remember the jacket and forget the gloves, then spend the back nine with cold, wet hands and a grip they cannot trust. A cheap pair of waterproof gloves is one of the best value items in a golf bag.

Spare golf shoes

Links turf holds water differently to parkland courses, and a second pair of shoes means a wet round on day one does not ruin day two. Worth the extra bag space on any trip longer than two rounds.

A soft travel bag for the car, a hard case for the train

If travel down is by rail rather than self drive, a hard travel case earns its keep. If it is a self drive trip, a soft case saves boot space without the same risk.
